Catalysts- Development

To develop my project, I sketched my favourite Modernist features from architecture, ballet, furniture and objects. This helped me to really identify the stylistic features of the movement, such as materials, shape and function.

I then began some initial idea sketches after choosing my favourite modernist features that the Queen would represent. I wanted to emphasise the 'machine aesthetic' along with the abstraction of shape in terms of the body and the clothing she would be wearing.

Once I had formed a solid basis of an idea, I used clay to experiment more with form before attempting a quick 3D sculpt of my design. I found that the shape was not exaggerated enough, especially around the skirt area of the dress, and also I had difficulty attaching some of the other external elements such as the shoulder decoration and the arms. However, the sculpture allowed me to better understand how she would look once crafted in a 3D programme as a final piece.

I did some further context research using some art books for video games. I chose to look at 'The Art of Destiny' and 'The Art of Dishonored 2' as both games featured classic and futuristic elements which were reminiscent of Modernism. I chose to spread my search over both objects and character designs in the two games as both categories would be useful in order to develop my design further.
