I chose Modernism as my theme for the catalysts project. I did research around Modernist furniture and architecture initially, particularly from the Bauhaus artists such as Marcel Breuer and Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe. However I then moved towards looking at the Bauhaus stage performances, such as the modernist-abstract 'Triadic Ballet' by Oskar Schlemmer, 1922. The ballet focused on the principal of trinity (3 Acts) and geometry, holding a large focus on how dancers move across a space.
I was interested at how the abstraction of shapes in this early form of Modernism fit together with the later features of Modernism, such as the machine aesthetic and focus on function when looking at furniture and objects from the 1930s. I then thought more about what Modernism truly is- It was seen as a rejection of traditional decoration and the introduction of an almost futuristic way of living, where 'form follows function' and people become surrounded by a machine aesthetic. As a result, I decided to create a Modernist Queen character for a game, developing a costume based on Bauhaus ballet research. She embodies and embraces all features of Modernism in an alternate universe.
