3 R's- Beginnings

I began the 3 R's project with my given object, a packet of cotton wool balls. I decided that I wanted to take a character design approach for this project and so I immediately looked at colourful and unusual character and object designs in  games such as Mario Kart. I then looked at ways that cotton wool balls are produced- they are grown, spun, bleached and sterilised, resembling perfect clouds in appearance. I looked at a different form of character design next, creating a powdered wig hairstyle, perhaps for an elderly lady or another character.

This experimentation with the cotton wool  brought me to my next stage of development, which was developing cloud animal characters. I thought about how a person, particularly a child's imagination, can create animals and creatures out of seemingly abstract nonsensical shapes of clouds in order to relate them to what they know and what makes sense, for example real life animals or creatures in stories. I used paper as a base and attached other materials such as wooden sticks, wire and elastic bands to the cotton wool structures to create variation and interest. I ended up with an array of fascinating made-up creatures, inspired by firsthand photos and observation of clouds.
