Weta Workshop is a New Zealand visual effects company, one of the worlds leading in design and effects. Their projects include: James Cameron's Avatar, TinTin, The Hobbit, Lord of the Rings, Blade Runner 2049, Warcraft, Thor Ragnorak, Ghost in the Shell and many others. I chose to research Weta as I could explore their many different departments, such as 3D modelling, costume design, concept art, electronics and animatronics, makeup and prosthetics, sculpting, prop and model making. Looking at the sculpting department, I was surprised to see that many of their models were produced physically rather than through digital sculpting, and that a lot of the props used in films were made using real materials rather than CGI. I have also chosen Weta Workshops as I like their immersive approach to designing environments, particularly in the fantasy genre. The use of plants, architecture and creature design is vast and imaginative which is reflected in both the digital and physical 3D work.
