LBM- Beginnings

For the start of the lens based media project, I selected this photo to bring to class. This photo was taken by accident when I was in a car, but consequently had a fascinating composition, colours and textures. In class I discovered that I was using a shallow depth of field- the focus was solely on the cyclist and wing mirror of the car, everything else was blurred. I felt that this created a more energetic picture and emphasised the speed and movement of the cyclist. Furthermore, the lines in the composition gave a strong sense of direction and contrasted against the more delicate textures of the brick and plaster walls. I also tried to search for a rule of thirds in my photo, which I was able to roughly pinpoint. I drew this onto my printed version.
In and around the studio, we were also told to explore with the notion of 'drawing with light'- using light to alter composition, colour and create new affects. I chose to photograph a girl's shoe, as I liked the way that light played off of the pearlescent leather. I found that when taken up close, the image became more abstract, and people were asking questions such as "what is this object?". This was an unexpected outcome which I found interesting.
