'Dissent and Resistance'- beginnings

I began the project by looking for inspiration at the Tate Modern. Exploring 'Dissent and Rebellion' presented me with a challenge as I was, at first, unsure of which path I should follow. By looking at various pieces of work by different artists I played around with the idea of challenging racism, sexism, political injustices and religion. Eventually, I decided to look at the notion of dissenting and resisting traditional values of religion, particularly Catholicism. I realised that this was something I could relate to myself personally as well as to the the rest of the world- I do not follow Catholicism like the previous and more traditional generations of my family did. In a way, I dissent from the traditional values of Catholicism and resist them sometimes without even noticing, as I have been raised in a non-pious family with a non-traditional outlook. For centuries parts of the western world have followed traditional catholic values- countries such as Spain, Italy, the Vatican, France, England and Ireland incorporated the catholic religion into everyday life, controlling views on science, marriage and equality.
In this project, I would like to explore the ways in which myself and modern society has dissented from traditional Catholic values and ways in which different freedoms and rights are celebrated, which oppose these values.
